http://www.clearimageautomotive.com/chevy_impala_ss_tubular_transmission_cross_members.php has crossmembers for the 91-96 models for all types of trannys. I feel one of these could work for the 77-90 models with a little modification, but im not 100% positive.

I gave them a call a couple weeks ago but they were not sure it would work. I will have to give them a call and ask them what the dimensions are for that crossmember.

i talked to Dan himself and he said it would not work, but i cant see why it wouldnt, its the exact same frame, might have to drill new holes in the frame but that aint nothing, im gonna try it one day once i get time and money to do a tranny swap, id like to get a th400 in there also

If it'll bolt into a bubble, it'll bolt into a box.

For those that want to retain their overdrive, the TH400 and 200-4r have the same mount location.

    Another X-member Source

Post  Sweet Seventy9 on Tue Nov 05, 2013 9:39 am

    I just got a response from Crossmembers.com -

         <snip>

    "info@crossmembers.com
    Hello Randy,
As for the GM "B" Body, I do make a crossmember for the 77-90 models with a 700R4 or 4L60 transmission.  Same unique patented design as our popular ""G" Body crossmember, and is a direct bolt-in installation.  I currently do not have this product on my website, but it can be ordered via phone, (330-753-5300) with a visa or mastercard, or we can email a paypal invoice for additional payment methods.  My P/N is RCB3-700, and it's priced at $279.00.  S/H to most states runs around $35.00.
    Best regards,"

Kinda price-y if you ask me....... Sad

Anyway, I put out some feelers and found out that GM made a TON of B-body dual exhaust x-members.  They were installed on ALL 94-96 impala SS, Caprice, roadmaster, and Cadillac Fleetwood's!
Any of those cars in the junkyard/ CL parting out ad's will have one. Only the pre-1994 cars dont have them.
The downside is that they were only for 700r4 - 4L60Es.
Can probably still get a few from GM too.  Sorry, I don't have a P/N yet.  I'll keep looking.

I was just thinking about something.. We're not alone in our need for a th350 x-member.  I bet if we get some type of petition or letter of interest with bunches of willing buyers names on it and submit it to the 2 x-member makers, we could get at least one of them to make a TH350 x-member.  Hell, it's just a matter of a different mounting plate on it.
We'd have to get people on other forums involved to increase our numbers and better our chance of having it made, but that shouldn't be a problem.

    Any thoughts??

I would not think there is much difference in a 700 R4 and Turbo 350-400 trans crossmember except for relocating it on the frame.

I personally have never done the swap, so I'm not positive weather it would work or not.
Somethings telling me it won't work though or everyone would be doing it.

I made my own for $91 fit like oem 400 turbo in a 80 Lesabre in the pic it wasn't finished, i put gussets on welded all the seams, cleaned and painted it, the black one is the modified 350 turbo crossmember which did not work they are positioned as they are suppose to bolt in the frame a big difference.

I also made my own solid engine mounts for the 455 Olds, oil distiribution block for gauge and dash light and the valve cover nuts. I modified the 307 ac brackets to fit the 455 with the smaller compressor, made my own spacer washers where ever I needed them. It helps a lot being a machinist.

Those are pricey thankfully I have experienced fabricator who will help with mine. But it's not

out of the ordinary I guess for those who want bolt-on there is a stiff price to pay especially that skinny tubular

one for 300 that's not very good seems like half thickness of a control arm tube.

    http://www.clearimageautomotive.com/images/impala_ss_cross_member_4L60E.jpg

Going to have one made up as well straight across for duals why they made the earlier ones like they did sigh.

The factory 94 and up trans crossmember is not a bolt-in in the 77-90 frame. The reason for this is the frame's inner rails have different brackets welded to them for the cross member mounting. However, the 94-96 factory crossmember is a two-piece stamped and welded assembly (not the one piece tubular design used in earlier models) and has designed in clearance for the left side exhaust pipe in true dual exhaust systems. This, in my opinion is worth using instead of hacking up the tubular CM, but you do have to fabricate and weld brackets to your side frame rails. Another advantage is you can then use th factory or aftermarket Pypes stainless dual system, and that makes a sweet set up.
