    12" rotors 15" wheels

Post  Myloth on Fri Feb 13, 2015 3:22 pm

Do the 12" rotors on the 90s B Body fit under the same B Body 15in wheels (ie 95 RM 15" wheel)

My old Riviera had 12in drums and the 15" wheels were a special size to fit the 12 Aluminum drums

are the B Body 15" wheels like that or as most Wagons came with 15s no? and didnt most wagons have 12"

    brakes?

Our b bodies came with either 9.5" drums or 11" drums and those fit fine behind 15's. Ive also confirmed the rear disc brakes off a 94 to 96 SS or 9c1 also fit behind a 15, and those rotors are 11.6 diameter, plus almost an inch for the caliper too, but there was only maybe 1/4" from the caliper to the rim. I would assume the 12" front rotors off of the same cars would fit also since the rotors are actually 11.8" but that i havent confirmed.

I see wagons listed with 12"(11.Cool front rotors and 15" wheels. Of course I was thinking about the 1le calipers from the f

body that is iffy. I am debating going to 17s or 18s as 15in tires are hard to find in anything but narrow or truck style but

I do have two sets of 15in rims already.

The Centric Rotor for the 94 RM says 11.86 and every RM for 1994 lists 15" wheels the same wheels I have a set

of black Steel 15x7s. I am wondering if it's worth it as the 11" on my 79' are very mediocre. But I would need

the hubs from a 94 (or any late model B) no? And if so aren't the Balljoints bigger? I don't mind swapping my

China made BJs for better brakes but has anyone tried it or think the later brakes are better? Last time I drove

a late model B it was an SS and that's different as it was 4wheel ABS I remember I did the brakes on it. Anybody

try a reasonable priced alternative to this braking mediocrity.

15" 5x5 "Steelies" go right on. Most wagons from 77-96 came with the 12" front brakes.
Someplace on here is a write-up about the swap.

Thanks for the info that's great. Ah the only issue is finding the spindles I found one on ebay for 75(nb it's NOS) but

no sign of it's sibling. Might have to hit the yards for these I know a place not too far that has a lot of full size

    Caddies for parts.

I'm going to do a yard hunt on the spindles the online is too pricey, thank you though.Or maybe do this conversion

I read about this while back this guy has all parts for B Bodies in Kits. This will do a C5 Upgrade but a minimum 500+

dollar bill plus no more 15" or 16" wheels but real world braking improvement, a thought for those of us contemplating large

    rims.

They're plentiful, but if you have any troubles finding them near you there's still maybe a dozen or so sets near me.

I was reading somewhere that the 2 piston (or is it 4 piston??) F-body 1LE calipers bolt right on with the 12" rotor upgrade.
They will NOT fit behind a 15" wheel though. 16" is the minimum.

That I read too I believe you just need a different plate for the dual piston aluminum which what I'd like at the minimum.

Yes you are right the parts are around although I'm not sure where,  there is a place about 30mi across the river.

That place seems to pop up with a lot of RWD Fleetwood parts on Car Part but I haven't checked them out yet. Locally

nobody seems to have any B Bodies of any vintage from 77-96 for parts. Quite few older folks still rolling in them though

and mainly they are the older variety 77-90 4 doors except few late wagons .

Just to be sure I would like to grab both sides of everything (rotors, calipers, spindles) easier that way

    then upgrade from there.

yo sweet i was looking to swap the fronts to 5x5 bolt pattern to match the rear axle and might as well upgrade from 11" -> 12" rotors the was this car for parts its a 92 olds98 sedan bubble body.
If compatible do i grab the spindle/rotor wHub/caliper & brackets and thats all i was gonna replace hoses and rebuild calipers

Yup, swap over the spindles and everything mounted to them. The 12" front brakes use what are referred to as the "Tall" spindles. There's a write-up on here someplace with fairly detailed instructions, even part numbers. If you want to go crazy, Belltech makes dropped spindles. Very Happy

    Hey need some clarification
I got new wheels and going 4.75 all around instead of 5x5
Im drilling the new pattern in the rear with a jig I ordered
The front pattern is correct but want to upgrade rotor size
So with using 1le gen 3. 92 camaro rotors what spindle is required? Is it the spindle that came with 11" or the 12" rotors
Reason is ordered timken bearings and inners (set6)are good but the outers are too small (set2) I needed the set3 . I assumed I would just use the 77 caprice bearings (set6/set2) but now I think I need the 12"rotor spindle also what bout the ones with 5/8" ball joint is that only 95+
Please anyone with advice or has done this mod let me kno thanks

It's been a long time since I did the swap but I do remember you have to use the "Tall" spindles from a wagon or 9C1. The 1LE rotors were used on those spindles. I don't remember the bearing sizes.

Try googling "GM B body 12" brake upgrade" for more info.

The spindle is the problem (Finding them). You can use either the Camaro 12"

5x4.75" rotor or the B Body 12" 5x5". I think you'd have to either go on a bug hunt to

find the late 9c1 B Body tall spindles (Yard or Ebay?) or get the 2" drop spindles for the

late B Bodies. You could also use the Impala SS brakes but you need 17" wheels minimum.

Yea I. Quickly found out when test fitting bearings on new rotor so Im gonna hit the yard Tuesday there's a 92 &95 caprice just need to check that they are 9/16" ball joints on the lower and not the 5/8" also that they have 12" rotors too
Also I thought the impala front calipers were the same size as reg caprices
I got impala so brakes in the rear that clear 15" steelies

I believe 1996 was the only year that gm finally upgraded to 5/8 lowers on the 9c1 only, i read this somewhere but i cant remember if its correct.
