    89 Caprice Cooling Problems

    Post  Toliver843 on Tue Sep 12, 2017 12:39 pm

I have a 89 caprice with a 350 sbc bored 60 over carb. Cant keep it cool gotta 165 thermostat and if you crank it and let it idle it still runs up to 200 but if you drive it it never cools it steady rises. I put an electric fan on it and when its on it doesnt even bring temp down. If it gets to 210 and i put it in park i never cools back down just maintains temp. I have a one row brand new radiator could that be the problem or is it something the man that built the motor didnt do right?

I'd check the thermostat first. it sounds like it's not opening properly.

I purchase a 4 core radiator from California. Its a Champion. I run a 160 thermostat plus an electric fan.

    My 383 engine has 11 to 1 compression and a 700R4 w/3.73 gears.

When cruising the highway its right at 160 with no fan on. In town I flip it on and it stays cool. Otherwise it will go to 180.

    Hi

Check the small stuff first save a few. Did you flush and burp the system? How about you water pump is it heavy duty , heavy heavy duty or plain cast iron ? If it's just cast iron get an aluminum Impeller Heavy duty at least if not the all aluminum Hvy Heavy duty.

Is your heat working (Possible problems with heater core)? Is your pressure cap holding pressure?

What kind of E- fans are you running? If they are undersized, like a lot of aftermarket fans, they may be your culprit.

When I first fixed up my engine, I was running small, puny fans that I bought on Amazon, and my car would overheat. After that, I switched them out for 2005 Chrysler 300 fans, and problem solved.

I run the 4 core aluminum radiator as I mentioned.  The fan is a 16" 2400cfm fan that I can turn on as needed.
I have the air flow coming from front to back.
